"What are we so afraid of?" workshop with Antonio Sacre

A Cultural Identity and Writing Workshop. Based on the work of Storyteller Jim May, this two-hour workshop gives participants specific models of how to find and write their own compelling cultural, personal, and family stories and provides them tools with which to share these stories.  By knowing our own stories, it can make us better equipped to hear someone else’s story.  This can lead to greater understanding, respect, and frankly, the opportunity to eat some really great food.

“Make the Heart Whole Again” Peace and Justice and Reconciliation Stories workshop with Milbre Burch.

In a nation torn by international terrorism and its own inner violence, stories of peach and justice and reconciliation are as potent as they are rare. Drawing on more than two decades of work in community, educational and correctional settings, Burch will explore reconciliation stories from oral and literary traditions, and strategize on sowing them in a landscape made bitter by fear, grief, anger and vengefulness. Participants will hear and receive an extensive bibliography of global stories from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe to use as resource material for researching and retelling the tales in their own communities.

"What’s Your Story? Story-Telling as a Leadership Skill" workshop with Wynn Montgomery

More and more leadership courses are recognizing the importance of story-telling.  This session, which attracted a large and enthusiastic audience at the 2006 Winter Festival, offers you an opportunity to explore this topic with other leaders and potential leaders.  The session looks first at some of the most common leadership roles and then considers how story-telling can contribute to your success in those roles. It includes some suggestions on how (and when) to tell your stories. The format is inter-active, so please be prepared to share your own experiences.

Wynn Montgomery is a training consultant who specializes in workforce development issues. He teaches various management courses for Continuing Education at Kennesaw State University and has designed leadership academies for public agencies. He is an experienced manager/leader who has been listening to stories since his childhood in Rome, Georgia. Since joining SOS and attending storytelling festivals, Wynn has recognized that everyone loves stories and that all of us are better communicators when we are story-tellers.

1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Workshop for Young Storytellers

Learn new skills and enhance those you already have by participating in this special youth workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to work with 4 experienced youth workshop leaders, each of whom will bring their unique voice to the participants’ experience.

• Josie Bailey will explain how to choose a story
• Heidi Cline will work with adding movement and drama to the story
• Christy Foelsch will show how any story can be fleshed out to give it color and depth.
• Ray Green will bring his bag of voices to add flavor to a story

Adults may observe this process but there is a fee ($15,00) for doing so. We encourage parents and others to listen to the storytellers who are sharing their stories at the same time as the workshop. Plan to listen to these young tellers as they share in the Youthful Voices Showcase following the workshop.
